Unidentified knocking sound
I need some help:
Heavy clunking noise, increases the longer I drive. Gets louder when I turn right. The sound is a loud knocking and I can feel the vibrations through the entire car. Seems to be coming from the rear. With windows open it sounds like a metallic clunk Seems speed related. But also reduces on Cruising speed. (so worst when accelerating or decelerating) Things inspected: Axles are good Driveshafts is good No play on wheelbearings or suspension No metal shavings on differential magnet plug Same issue with original wheels Noise started on the way home from drift event. At that moment I had some vibrations from dirt inside the wheels. No noise or strange behavior during drifting event. Car specs : 2013 model Kw v3 coilovers Full exhaust 8.5j front 9.5j rear Update: Since I was back home for 2 days I went to pick up the car from the dealer again as they still couldn't find the issue. So I went for a drive through the hills. For the first 1.5h I had no issue what so ever. No noise, no strange feeling. Then it started coming back slowly. First I felt like a little vibration when doing a right hand corner. Then the sound started becoming louder and louder. I found a small drift spot and did some figure eights. Result, no noise during drifting..... Besides that the sound got worse and worse the more I drove it. The day after I went to the store (15 min drive). Again sound or vibration. |

By chance did you changed to different wheels at event? Are wheel lugnuts retightened after some mileage?
(that assuming that there really is no play at any suspension bushing) |

Long shot but possible:
I broke a belt in a tire on my Talon once. Nothing visible and all was smooth until I drove for a bit and the tire warmed up. Symptoms were similar to those described. The only way we figured it out was when I swapped the tires rear to front and the condition moved with it. Pulled the tire and it was a mess inside even though the outside looked fine.

Have you inspected the rear coilovers? Clunking sounds like it could be either settings or condition of the dampers. I'd also inspect specifically the top hats, ensure that the top nut is fully tightened and has not backed off.
Clunking from the rear when you're turning right tells me it's probably on the rear right (passenger) side, because weight shifts in a turn. |
