FI and Insurance

Those with FI....have you reported it to your insurance?

Are your kits covered, and if you didn't report, are there any concerns with your insurance company denying coverage?

I've always told my insurance company any time I have done a major modification to my vehicle. It's really up to you if you want to pay the extra to your insurance to cover your mods or not. In the event of a major crash and your car gets totalled (along with your FI kit) you run the risk of eating the cost of your mods and only getting money back for just the value of the car itself.

Considering that most of the more common FI options (turbos & SC's) tend to locate their kits in the space in front of the engine and are more susceptible to damage from a front end collision, I would say it would be wise to do so.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you went with custom parts / equipment insurance? How much did it incrementally cost you, and what insurer are you with? I've heard State Farm is not mod friendly

Correct, you would need CPE insurance. When I had my Edelbrock SC and Ohlins (basically my two "big ticket" items), I was paying about $80 more a month with Farmers. Do note that I also had a lot of "package" discounts since I also had coverage on another vehicle, home insurance and life insurance with them. Also, we did something called "stated value insurance" which covered me for a specific amount we agreed on and not the actual market value of all the mods.

Also, do note, that depending on your agreement, in the event that you total your car, just like the vehicle itself, the insurance company may or may not also end up owning the mods themselves ie your FI kit, etc. There might be some leeway there depending on the company, where you can take back the parts in exchange of a deduction in the cash back and/or the stock part, but make sure to read your fine print or ask the question.
