Oil filter deal

I thought I'd pass this on to other FR-S/BRZ owners...
My local Toyota/Scion dealership didn't have any oil filters for the FR-S in stock (how then would they do a proper oil change???) so I called a couple Subaru dealers, who all had them. At one dealer, Walk-in price was $7.75 but I offered to buy in bulk. He knocked the price down to $6.28. I bought 8 (all he claimed to have in stock).
I could have gotten them slightly cheaper online but when you add in the shipping charges, local was a better deal and I shot the shit with the guy for a moment or two, so if I need parts in the future, I now have a 'contact' guy.
Anyway, I've decided that even though I can get 2 years of free oil changes from Scion, I'm not too comfortable turning my car over to someone else to do simple, but very important tasks like an oil change, so I will be doing my own (as I have for the past 35 years or so).
Walmart has 5 gallon jugs of Mobil1 0-20w for about $28.00, so $35.00 for an oil change that I know was done correctly and with the proper stuff is cheap insurance to me.
I doubt that I will be driving more than 10k a year so forfeiting my free oil changes for 2 years will cost me around $140.00. I'm OK with that.
Here's another idea that you might try (I was going to, but didn't)...
Since we get 2 years of free oil changes, call up your local dealership and speak with the service manager. Explain that instead of him giving you 2 years of free oil changes, how about he give you FREE oil filters and you'll change the oil yourself. He saves the labor time and the oil cost. He might not go for it, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Good luck.
YMMV

Toyota dealers are starting to get the filters in stock (Subaru filters in Toyota boxes). I FINALLY got my case today after waiting almost 3 weeks.

I'm not sure how the no-charge maintenance works for Toyota, but GM we claimed the services under warranty. The dealer itself didn't pay for the servicing as it was reimbursed by corp. If thats the case, the only person really losing out is the tech who won't flag the service (but they probably wont care as warranty services pay hardly anything).

I'm pretty sure Toyota dealers understand that since the FR-S is an enthusiast car, most people will be doing their own servicing or with somebody they trust (usually not a dealer). Don't undervalue a good relationship with a dealer though as they can help you out in a crappy situation if you've been a good customer.
