Check engine and traction control symbol in rental

Hello- I have rented an FRS, 2015 automatic and both times after driving for awhile the check engine and traction control symbol appear.
I pull off and turn engine off and restart and traction control symbol gone but check engine light still appears. The car drove fine and I was near dealer so I returned and told them about it and they said they would check it out.

Both times it was dry with low humidity but ambient temp in the mid-80s.

I did not push the car either time. Both times it happened when I was in heavy stop and go traffic with occasional breaks were you could go faster.

The reason I am renting is I wanted an extended "test drive" before I purchased car. I really enjoyed both rentals and I am close to purchasing.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

There are about 1,000 things it could be from a loose gas cap up to the engine is going to die any second. The only way to have any clue at all what is up is to read the code that is throwing the CEL.

i doubt it has anything to do with the air temp, my 86 does ok in the dry 120 degree AZ heat..if it is a full time loaner/rental who knows what sort of abuse it went through.

Nope, that's not normal behavior for the car.

I'd suggest you call your test drive good and take the car back to where you rented it from and turn it in.

rental- take it back. You don't want to diagnose or give a fuck. You definately don't want to be driving it when whatever is broken on that car decides to go.

Don't even drive it back, call the rental co., tear them a new asshole complain it goes into limp mode and have them TOW IT BACK AT THEIR EXPENSE.

By any chance are you or the rental company using any kind of OBDII device in the car?

I actually had that combination in my car the other day. I had my bluetooth OBDII device on and Torque running on an Android tablet. I have the OBDII on a switched extension cable and stopped to grab something at the store. Didn't turn the device off and when I re-started the car I had a CEL and the Trac Control indicator was lit, even though the car seemed to be running fine. Torque told me it was a bus communication error of some sort. I used Torque to clear the code and it's been fine ever since. If you don't have Torque or access to a code reader, find an auto parts store that can clear the code for you. Many, if not most, will do it for free. If the code stays cleared, you're good to go. If it comes back, like others have said, call the dealer and have him pick it up. You don't want to take a chance on being dinged for something you didn't do.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I turned the rental in both times because I was on my way back to the rental agency and was done with my drive anyway.

Almost five years in and never had that happen. I would consider it representative. Rentals get abused; sports car rentals get murdered.

Sports car rental = EVERYONE before you beat the crap out of that car! From the salesman to the 70 year old grandpa looking for a fun weekend. As long as you told them don't worry. That car has 50 different peoples farts in the driver seat. That's gotta be the cause of something.
