TRD Exhaust - 2 Questions

Hello all,

After 32,000 miles, I took the TRD "D tip" Exhaust off of my 2015 FR-S, cleaned it up and put it in storage along with all new gaskets and bolts for reinstallation. I put the stock exhaust back on because of the noise on long trips. While I really like the sound of the TRD exhaust for around town driving, and it is a quality piece in near perfect condition, it made listening to the audio system on long (400+ mile) solo trips just too much and I would arrive fatigued.

My questions are two:
  1. Is there any difference in the 2017 86 that would preclude installing this part from my 2015 FR-S? The TRD catalog seems to indicate that it should be backwards and forwards compatible from 2013MY to 2017MY. I seem to recall that someone on the forum had a problem installing an aftermarket exhaust component system from an older FR-S to a new 86. (I know the headers are different!). [NEVER MIND, I answered this question by searching! the issue was axle backs where the hole spacing is a bit different at the rear end of the tailpipe flange. Not at the mid-pipe/tail-pipe spring bolt flange]
  2. The front end of the tailpipe and resonator on the TRD are smaller diameter than the mid-pipe and then open up after the resonator to the same diameter as the stock tailpipe and resonator. Has anyone considered splicing the stock tailpipe and resonator into a TRD tailpipe? I would think the sound would quiet down a bit (larger resonator) and be a bit deeper (larger diameter pipe). If so, this might meet my desire for sporty, but less intrusive highway cruising.

Well, I hear that about aftermarket mufflers being a bit "much" for long haul trips. I've often thought about switching out for trips ..... just thought about it.

A "quick disconnect" coupler and hangars would be a handy feature for aftermarket mufflers ...... remember, you heard about it here first .....
