Rear Speaker measurements

I didn't see this posted before but for anyone interested, here are some measurements I took of the rear speaker cavities for people wanting to install custom enclosures. These are from the passenger side (USDM).

These are rough measurements and should not be taken exactly. I'm eventually going to remove these speakers and build custom fiberglass enclosures to mount stereo mid-bass modules. So this should give a rough estimate of the sizes we are working with here.

[edit] Just for clarity, the three small arrows are depth measurements.

I was curious if someone was going to make an enclosure for this spot. Seems wasted as is, then you won't take up trunk space

Yea, that's the plan. The trunk is small enough as is. I'm not going to take up any more space back there when the rear speaker locations have more than enough room.

It looks like a pair of JL 8" subs will fit nicely: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1369207...-4.html?tp=111

They require a small sealed enclosure at around 0.35 ft^3 which would fit volume-wise in this space. The trick is to minimize acoustic shielding from the factory speaker grill. It's going to be smaller than the 8" speakers but if you pick your crossover point low enough, it would be acoustically small and not block the sound.

How well would these compete with say... a 10in sub in a self powered enclosure tucked in the corner of the trunk?

Depending on price/performance/etc I might be inclined to buy a pair of these off you.

Have you considered cutting out the stock speaker grill and adding a new, larger opening?

The 10" would probably play a little deeper and would be a little more ideal for a car of this size. The tradeoff is that it would be mono, which doesn't matter for the deepest bass. And it would be a little more difficult to not make it sound like it was coming from the trunk.

I'm not going to go for a full 20-20kHz system this time. I think 2 8" subs in stereo will provide some good mid-bass bump and would provide stereo separation for drum tracks. The 10 would play lower while the 8's might feel a little more realistic.

My goal is to not cut into anything if I can help it. I want to place the subs behind the panels as is without modifying the grills. It may not work but it's something I'm going to look in to. The problem is that the panels will become passive radiators and will distort the sound of the subs. I'll have to play around with it to see what crossover points I can use to minimize this and what dampening I'll need to do to reduce vibrations.

Subbed for subs!
I really like the sound (no pun intended) of this idea.
