Subaru BRZ/86/FRS in Racing Games
Hey All,
Recently I went to my very first track day, didn't do any driving but got to ride shotty/passenger in a lot of different cars, but mainly FRS's. Maaan, you can watch all the youtube videos you want but actually being inside the vehicle IRL just cannot be accurately portrayed in any media. After that experience, I know now that for all the little voices in my head that told me "MORE POWAH. WANT" the car as is - is still way better than I am. ![]() Anyhow, a few of the guys I met suggested picking up a Racing/Car/Sim Game to play - obviously not entirely representative of real driving, but they said it'd help me understand/get a better feeling for how cars are driven at the limit (corners at various speeds etc), plus the games nowadays do a decent representation of how the different cars handle/feel. Never touched racing games before, I have Mario Kart 64 and that old Star Wars ep I pod racing game - I was really tempted to pick up an X-box One (though I haven't owned a console since PS2) just for Forza 5, which our cars are an option to use. Thankfully I didn't (a lot of money just for one game) jump the gun, yesterday's STEAM deal was for Grid Autosport - for about 25 bucks, I did a quick google search to see if our cars were in it - BAM subaru BRZ. So I picked it up, installed it, gave it a few runs before bed - I didn't finish a single lap without smashing into the walls/destroying the body/totalling the car. I have a lot to learn. I am a terrible driver. I'm guilty of driving the car IRL a little recklessly and I've gotten away with it up until now, but playing last night was sort of a wake up call that I need to learn what I'm doing first before trying to show off - it only takes one mistake. Anyhow! I'm curious to see if anyone else has more experience playing Racing Sims, and if they've raced our cars in them. Does the car feel different in different games? How'd the BRZ feel in the game compared to IRL? Any thoughts appreciated, Cheers

While I agree that some people can learn lines while playing a racing game Like Forza or GT, there are certain things that sims do not communicate well.
Things like tire noise. Tires communicate to the driver when they are at their limit in various degrees. G-force. When cornering you can feel when the car is at the edge. That feeling combined with the tires communicating provide a great deal of information to the driver that I personally feel games do not execute well.

With the regular controller I won't bother play any racing game.
I have a set of Logitech G27 and playseats which perfect for a simulation. I play Gran Turismo 5 on it and it is absolutely amazing since you can adjust the force of the steering wheel and etc. They also have Brz and 86 |

I'm playing racing games since Gran Turismo 1, and I've been playing a LOT from GT3 to GT6, but now that I have moved to PC, I can say that Gran Turismo is really a few steps behind racing sims like Assetto Corsa.
Forza and Gran Turismo are usually called "simcade", so half way between sim and arcade. They are great games, but if you want a sim, you should check Assetto Corsa, Project CARS (going out in November), iRacing, or even the "old" RACE 07 if your computer is not powerfull enough ! GRID Autosport is a fun game, I've played ~25 hours in it, but it's not a sim either... Our car is not in any of these games yet, sadly, but Assetto Corsa has announced that the GT86 will be added in a future update ![]() As said before, keep in mind that you need a wheel to play racing games, with a pad you can learn the racing lines but you will miss a lot in term of feeling and steering angle management. I think Forza 5 does a fairly good job at simulating tires, not as hardcore as some pc sims but definitely the best console racer so far. And you get a choice of the BRZ or GT86 , both of which are really nicely modeled.

IMO games like forza can help you learn the right line to take and to get familiar with a track, but like others have said, it's impossible to really get the feeling of driving across. They are good for some basic fundamentals such as smoothness with your inputs, but not much else

I play Gran Turismo with a logitech wheel. I think its a great investment. As others have said while you can't get the intensity of driving on a track for real you can really learn to hone your skills. Racing lines, throttle application, heel toe, learning limits of track and car. I know Gran Turismo is pretty good in terms of physics and I've heard Forza is not far behind. PC racing simulators also take it to a whole other level over console games, they are fantastic. Definitely invest in GT5/6 or PC sim and a wheel if you are serious about going on a track. It may sound ludicrous to learn from a video game but its effective.

I play iRacing, Assetto Corsa, and Richard Burns Rally with a Logitech G27. I used to play Forza and Gran Turismo and they honestly don't even come close to the physics modeling and force feedback that PC sims offer. They may as well be arcade racers in comparison.
If you want to see how a GT-86 feels in a real racing sim, Assetto Corsa is getting both a street and a track version in a future patch: http://www.assettocorsa.net/assetto-...g-rsr-nurburg/ |

We've got GT6 and the Logitech wheel with our PS3. Of course, my BRZ is the game is tuned quite a bit… my husband kept his stock in the game and has fortunately gotten better at driving it over his regular WRX collection (I teased him for a while that we couldn't get the BRZ until he stopped hitting things in the non-AWD car
). When we finally get out of this break-in period, I'll have to turn off my additions and compare! (I'd never have the real $ to do what I do to my cars in the game… especially as my favorite Mine's Skyline isn't even legal in the US… )edit: I know Jeremy Clarkson, when they were still allowed to play the GT games, used to say the cars handled quite like the real ones. |

Don't worry, imo GRID isn't very good for clean serious racing. I too always found myself crashing into walls and using other cars as my brakes. I find Assetto Corsa and Project CARS to be much better as sim games. Now I just need to scrap up enough money in my Steam wallet to buy the DLC so I can drive all 500 versions of the twins...
