Great tips on oil temps, pressure, and weights for the track
Great tips on oil temps, pressure, and weights for the track.
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDfFJ5s6IDg"]FRS - BRZ Oil Pressure and Temperature Tech FA20 - YouTube[/ame] I'll definitely be switching to a heavier oil once winter is over and track season starts again.

I track 5w30 on stock drivetrain with oil cooler. He is saying 10w40 would be better?
I don't have a pressure gauge

Interesting, thanks for posting. I'm in the UK so we don't have extreme heat and usually we don't have extreme cold either, so my engine builder recommended going for 5w30. At the moment (well, since I got the turbo installed a few months ago) I've been running 0w30 but my engine builder says it never really gets cold enough here to warrant having a 0w grade oil.
I was surprised in the video that he said if you've got a turbo you'd need to go straight to 10w40, as the shop that installed the turbo specifically recommended 0w30 to me (and I believe that's what they use in their 420 bhp turbo track only GT86, but I'll ask them).

I don't track my 86 but 0W-30 sounds too thin for a track car. It's sheer strength would be non-existent once up to temp and its gonna cook a bearing. A heavier oil will maintain viscosity and offer better protection at higher temps which you would certainly see on track and even more with a turbo.
If I was gonna track my 86 I'd probably run 10W-40. That is what I run on my Z06 with oil temps at top off about 270F. |

5w-30 for me with an oil cooler, temperature stabilizes at around 230, pressure stays above 55psi, stays stable for 1+ hour lapping sessions.
I'd be real hesitant going to a 40 wt unless the car lives it's life at the track. Just going to rob power and efficiency in a street car. |
