Do any of you play? have any recommendations for a good starter piano. digital would be fine (preferred) as it will just be to learn on. i would like it to have 88 keys, weighted keys and have the keys be velocity sensitive.

I am an "amateur" but I could've gotten into music school for piano performance if I wanted to (although not top tier lol). I have a Roland FP-7F which I got used on Ebay for 1.6 grand, I'd suggest you look for that same model or similar as they'd be going for less now.

If I were to do it again I might have cheaped out a little more and gotten an FP-7. The "escapement" thing that manufacturers advertise is just a gimmick, it's a notched rubber thing that the key will click against and doesn't actually give you the functionality of the escapement on a piano.

Since you're a beginner this talk probably doesn't mean much to you, basically the actions suck (from the perspective of an advanced pianist) until you make the leap to the Yamaha Avantgrands (which cost as much as a real grand piano). For the beginner, they all are basically the same.

I didn't really try many <1k digital pianos so if that's your budget good luck. I'm sure they're mostly the same anyways.

Kurzweil & Yamaha..best quality and weighted actions for straight piano usage (synths, it's a diff story). Used is best for getting something really quality (a top-model) vs buying a lower-model brand new; CL is always a great place. Most of the time, used prices can be 1/3-1/2 off of retail price..and no tax too

I suck and am a beginner. I've only taken "beginner" and "intermediate" courses at local JC and also state colleges (mainly for fun and just for elective bs courses). I've taken the same intro/beginner course like 3x and intermediate like twice over 6+ years at different colleges (again, just for fun and to pass time and maybe learn something new). The thing I noticed is, it really depends on the teacher (most suck) and I just basically learned not much. I am sure private instruction is the only way you ca really learn a lot; but, I never had that kind of money. YouTube tutorials are so much better than non-private/college courses. I've learned 1000x more about piano and theory through YT vs 5-6 courses at college. Of course, I am sure if you actually "majored" in music/piano at college, it would be a diff story and they would teach you well; but as for bs intro/beginner courses at college..they suck (YT is much better).

I mostly use the piano so I can produce music; so a little piano knowledge is needed. But, once in a while I will practice soul/funk/groove/jazz covers for fun.

I'll start digging around of Craigslist. I understand music some as I play bass and guitar fairly well. Play some saxophone. When I started bass I dabbled into theory and that stuff. Piano just intimidates me but I'm ready to try and learn it.

I'm not a player, but my wife is. She plays in a couple of bands and lots of church stuff.

She is very particular about feel, and loves her Yamaha MOX8 she uses on stage. At $1,500 online you really can't beat it.
Having raised a houseful of musicians I've learned that if you are serious about learning you are also going to learn better on a higher quality instrument. I wouldn't go too much below this price if new. Yes, you can learn to play on anything but the sound quality and touch is what will keep you playing.

I think the best way would be go to local music instrument store and try some of their keyboards. I prefer the weighted keys as they mimic the real piano. Have fun learning it!
