Proper Intake for 86/BRZ

Not a vend - just showing a new way of thinking. An intake that does away with the MAF having the factory ECU run in Speed Density, and an intake that actually reduces pressure drop (negative boost) in the inlet and increases power.

It works....as you might expect.
Prototype version only to get baseline pressure drop logs

Oh yes, there is a K&N panel filter that goes into the front of the intake for normal use
No bogging, no stalling, no flat spots, no weird fuel trims, just sharp throttle response and good - actual - power gains from 5500rpm onwards.

Looks nice. Not sure where it would pull air from with the hood closed.

Nice...and since you'd need a tune to run this intake, will you be selling the intake only or will you be offering any intake + tune package?

I remember awhile back you had a mail-order/canned tune for the forester xt....is that right? Any similar tunes for the 86?

Looks okay, but the stock box is already perfect for this car. I wish I knew what I know back then about this car

Log the pressure drop in the inlet manifold on a fourth gear pull to redline. You will see a 5kpa drop. Far from perfect

That metal box will just soak up heat like a mother fucker IMO. Especially when stopped. This looks no different than the HKS short ram intake that uses the mushroom filter with the metal plate to direct air into it. Agency Power has one similar also and those 2 intakes are worse designed intakes for this car IMO. The intake boxes all out perform those 2 SRI intakes that just use a straight tube to filter to the TB. In the end true CAI, not the intake boxes like AFE/Greddy/Injen, are the best aftermarket intakes you can get if you want a cone type filter. Then the best is the OEM air box.

Honestly you should be getting a tune before you get any other mods if you plan to get all basic bolt ons. They arent half as good as they would be with a tune.

Tunes are the best gains you can get for the cost and you get a free baseline so when you do future mods you get an idea of what your mods altogether gain if you care about such things.

I agree with what you say. Intakes are a waste of money when you can get the same performance from a 50 dollar drop in filter that will be more efficient and less prone to heat soak. Like it or not I bet this intake will still suck in hot air especially when your stopped at a light whereas the OEM air box wont.

The stock box is more than enough for this car. Anyone who gets an intake for power are getting it for the wrong reasons. A drop in filter gets just as much of gains as other intakes and according to the D-sport article and some dyno's on these forums by independent shops/owners the drop ins are better than 80% of the intakes available.

Cars with well designed air boxes shouldnt be touched. You dont touch things that are already working/designed well. Subaru/Scion spent millions in R&D on this engine and I am sure they spent a good amount of time designing the air box with the gains the aftermarket drop ins/ducts/tubes get when used along with it.

I dont see how this is any better than just getting a K&N filter with the OEM air box. Or any other aftermarket drop in filter. You can get a duct/silicone tube along with the drop in filter for the cost of most intakes and probably around the same cost as this intake that will be less prone to heat soak than this metal box the filter is surrounded in..

Almost all intakes get around the same gains as a drop in and this shouldnt perform any different IMO.
