Engine Check Light: P1604 Startability Malfunction

G'day Folks

I was driving my 86 yesterday, exactly when my mileage struck 8,900km, noticed I had problem accelerating and the engine shaked.

Continued driving about 2 km and stopped at a red traffic light. Noticed idle dip to as low as 200RPM and back up to 700RPM. A/C was switched off since I left home.

When the light goes green, drove up but unable to go more than 3000RPM- hardly reached and all I could drive was about 20km/h. Continued for another 200m, and restarted my engine. Engine Check Light lit.

Continued for another 6-8km and the same thing happened. Decided to stop and towed back my 86 to the nearest Toyota Service Center.

Torque app diagnosed P1604 error code. Google says it's Startability Malfunction & seems very general. Confirmed with Toyota service hand's diagnosis- the same error code.

Whilst at the service area, unable to start my engine like there was no fuel at all eventhough meter show up 1/4 (and Torque's as well). Fuel pressure pretty low about 3500 kg/something (cant recall).

Attempted to fuel up my 86 and started my car. Succeeded.

Service hands concluded something in the tank fuel system and having a look at it in details before returning the car.

Anybody experienced the same, or similar? What are your thoughts?

P/S: My ride is still stock.

Cheers,
A.

I have had that code come up before on my nexus 7 running the HKS carscope app, but never the check engine light.

My first thought is of the crossover fuel pump, the one that moves fuel from one side of the saddle shaped tank to the other, leaving fuel in the tank inaccessible.

Calum,

Guessed so. Today the service hands looked into it. I believe you have the point there.

Hopeful for nothing really serious!

Cheers,
A.

I had seen this fault through Techstream, but never had any CEL.

I cleared the code and it hasn't come back, I didn't notice any issues with my car!

I will PM you a useful site.

Hi Ahaghshenas,

I did reset the CEL via torque before towing it to the service center. Did a hard reset as well by doing the batteries just to be sure. I am unsure if this will reset the error code as well however it came up again after a short test drive to a point I cannot restart my engine.

It does make sense that I ran out of fuel though meter shows 1/4 after we succeeded to restart the engine aftee filling the tank up. But had to press on the gas whilst.

From the latter I think Calum does have a point as well. Hope will get to know the story tomorrow. It is 2045HRS in Brunei now :0)

Please do PM me the website/link. Hopefully I can dig up something!

P/S: Working around with sense of logic due to limited or no technical knowledge at all. So pardon me!

Cheers,
A.
