Hey Guys,

Many of you may not know of us since we specialize in Honda transmissions. We have been making Honda Carbon Composite Synchros for several years now with great results. Now we are thinking of expanding into the FRS/BRZ market with carbon composite synchros, but I'm not sure if there is enough interest to warrant the tooling and production cost. I'm looking for some feedback to see if we should proceed.

Idk if I would be interested in a full set but definitely would be interested in some for 1-2. Unless you need a g-pig then I'm down. Lol

Well, the transmission in my 2013 FR-S shifts just fine, so, I wouldn't be interested.

However, maybe ol @Ultramaroon might be interested ....... he has a history of tearing up transmissions .......

The synchro works as the brake for the gear to synchronize the shaft speed and reduce shift grind during gear engagement. The carbon fiber lining engages the gear more precisely by stopping the gear rotation faster than a stock brass synchro.

There is a very good article by Hoerbiger that shows direct comparison of performance of carbon synchros and manufacturing processes side by side. (link below) I think the biggest difference you will see is that carbon is less sensitive to fluid choice and performs much better at high RPM shifting. Under normal to extreme driving the carbon will outperform brass or sintered every time.

Most FRS/BRZ transmissions are still under warranty but I see quite a few that seem to fail. If we proceed with this project the parts will be available later this year or early 2018. You will also see some close ratio gears and other performance parts just about the time the factory warranties start to expire.

Ballpark cost for these if and when you make them?

On the Hondas, is there any negatives during normal "easy" driving? Difference in engagement effort, etc?

Projected price will be about the same as Honda ($300) for 1-6 set.

The only negative I have ever heard is in extremely cold conditions with thicker MTF the carbon synchros can feel a bit notchy until they warm up, but normally they have a better shift feel than brass and can be used for daily driving and performance use.

Same thing on allot of 86s, shifting when the transmission fluid is cold is notchy, so wont make a difference in my mind.
