Synchros finally starting to die?

So today I went in to the dealer because there is a sound near the transmission that sounds like scratching while coasting in gear. The dealer had a service advisor drive my car, and he told me that my synchros were dying.

From neutral to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, the gears are VERY crunchy. Shifting from 1st to 2nd sometimes there is an audible grind noise, even with clutch to the floor. 1 out of 10 shifts from 1st to 2nd block me from shifting, and I have to go to 3rd.

Sound like a synchro problem? I have an appointment next friday at the dealer, and he told me that he would have a tech look at it and it would take about 3 to 4 hours. He told me that if it was synchros, that they would order new synchros and put them in the transmission. Which sounds outrageous to me.

Should I push for a whole transmission replacement? Would I be wrong to assume that a new Throw-out Bearing should be installed with no charge? Or at least the price of part only?

Year? Mileage? Any prior service to the trans or its fluid? Do you drive it like you stole it every time you get in?

2013 with just over 36k miles. Never touched the transmission. Mostly highway miles since I bought the car. Spirited driving, yes. Thrasing? No.

Sounds like your age and mileage put you outside of warranty, yes? Any mods like a short shift kit? It seems very strange to have that sort of problem with a fairly young car in both years and miles, especially since others have them with more miles. Are they covering this work, or are they planning to charge you out the nose? The way I see it, either way, if the synchro replacement does not resolve the problem then they should replace the transmission without further charging you beyond labor. And if they agree to that, I'd get it in writing. I'd also ensure they put fresh fluid in the trans with the job.

To answer your main question, yes, rough shifting accompanied by grinding during gear changes would indicate synchros failing, or something is very out of adjustment. My other car does it if I shift too quickly from 1st to 2nd, and has now started occasionally doing it when I do a quick downshift from 3rd to 2nd. I have to imitate granny in the low gears.

I would argue that anything transmission related would be under powertrain correct? The car is stock other than a Berk single exit muffler delete and some Enkei wheels. Im going to tell the guy that if I am going to be charged for anything, to not touch the car and I will go to another dealer.

Yes, you're correct. If memory serves, that warranty period is longer and still intact for you, yes?

This sounds like the normal crunchy/difficult shifts that I get when the trans is cold. Shifting from 1-2 crunches or sometimes locks out and even sometimes 2-3 is crunchy/grindy while the transmission is cold. I'm not sure what kind of temperatures you are getting in Atlanta right now but this started since the temperatures dropped below 15c(59f) around here. If your temperatures are around that or colder, try driving the car around for at least 10-15 mins and let the car fully warm up and see if the issue clears up. If so, it's normal and nothing to worry about but if not, then yes, you've got something odd going on.
