transmission done?

two weeks ago, my transmission wouldnt go into reverse, first, or second. 3,4,5,6 gears would work, but in those gears, the shifter would be loose and wobbly. it could move 6 inches in any direction and still stay in gear. i drove to my mechanics shop like this, starting from stop in 3rd. when i get there, surprise surprise, the tranny is back to normal. ok so here i am two weeks later. and the tranny has done this again and seems to be stuck this way. i have googled, forum searched etc etc. cant find an answer.
my mech says the linkage is A-ok

I'll guess the shifter gate plate has come lose or the linkage has just become unglued.

I reckon it's time for someone to open up the top and take a look see at the innards of the shifter.

Did your mech even inspect the shifter? Did you see him physically take out the shift boot etc to take a look? Many mechanics are too lazy and won't touch the interior or won't try to fix something they know nothing about, like transmissions.

Wow! I was absolutely sure that would be the issue. I'm still thinking something is up with the linkage, though.

All the symptoms of a linkage issue. May even be a really simple fix! I call BS on the mechanic.

The Subaru service manual will tell you how to gap the reverse lockout plate properly. You would need a feeler gauge from the local hardware store.

Once you remove the shifter boot you should be able to see it. Might need to remove the center console trim as well. The lockout plate needs some grease as well.
