Has anyone tried the Racing Brake setup?

A while back, I drove a students FD3S with that kit and it was awesome.

Looks like they make a kit for the 86....

I had their two piece rotors, pads, lines, and regular rears on my TSX before the BRZ. It was a FANTASTIC upgrade...and still going strong after 5 years too.

Their two piece design is really cool and they have kits for us (probably the same ones they used for the WRX):

I am thinking about going with RacingBrake again for the BRZ and, like you, am wondering if anyone has this on their 86.

Only 24mm rotors. Not what I want. How are the consumable costs and pad choices? Actually those are oem size rotors... So for a track user outside of pedal feel (and reduced unsprung weight)what does this kit get you?

Just checked the prices for new rings... About 350 each! Ouch that's $200 more per rotor than the Essex sprint kit!

Since there is no increase in thermal mass, consumables would have to be uber cheap and there better be tons of pad choices for this to be considered by any track user IMO. That doesn't appear to be the case here.

I haven't tracked any of my cars so I can't really comment on the thermal capacity or longevity, etc. I did take a closer look though...
The rings are 350 for a pair...not each. They still are more expensive than the Essex kit, but only slightly ($20 more as Essex is 165 each). These are oem sized rotors...although I think they do offer a "oversized" kit, but it's not thicker, still 24mm.

I doubt these are in the same league as the Essex kit, which I think was specifically designed for the car. I would put this on par with the Wilwood kit that someone has here that was designed to be used on the WRX.

For the price (their amazon store has it for around $1,200)...I still think it's pretty cool though.

Good call, I've never seen rotors sold as pairs so I just assumed they were single

So these are really just a cosmetic brake kit with a slight weight benefit and slight feel benefit I guess?

You could probably see it that way. Maybe an oem plus type kit...for those who want a bit more than the oem setup in terms of form and some function.

Either way...anyone else had experience with RacingBrake, or have them on their vehicle?

If all you're after is a bit more than OEM performance then stop looking any further than better pads and fluid. If you want the bling from a BBK, then you have to decide if it's worth the money for you.

They have a different.design for rotors and that allows them to be thinner.

On the FD (same size I think) they were fantastic.

They might cool a LITTLE better if you run ducts. The center mounted design is to allow for cheap hat production. The way it center mounts has to create a crapload of turbulence though..

One of the rotors primary jobs is to pull heat away from the calipers and hold it until it can be removed. Heat removal is NOT the primary job. Because of that, an INCREASE of thermal mass is always going to be required if the OEM size doesn't have enough mass (which depending on the driver/car/track, it may not - for me at Sebring for example it definitely does not). This kit doesn't increase it so to me, there is basically zero functional difference between this and stock except for what I already noted.

For the FD3S (with a different hat obviously) then this would be a larger rotor than OEM... so there's an increase in thermal mass in that case...

If they work any better on track in a car that has reached or passed the limits of the OEM rotors with good pads/fluid, great, but call me extremely skeptical.... A BBK for me will always be focused on fixing a problem. That problem will always be a need for additional thermal mass. More efficient cooling, weight savings, consumables, and a few other items are secondary and of varying importance.

Speaking of consumables, are any of the excellent pad choices available for these calipers? What's the pad shape? If not that would eliminate it even if it were the best brake system ever... but I have to assume that it's a common pad? I hope? Also the calipers are 6061-T6 alloy, from what I recall that's not the most ideal alloy for calipers.

For just a little more they offer a 332x24 mm kit... The small kit looks good too but seems like a lot to spend for what you get. The rears seem really nice too.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same kit?

I'm only talking about their BBK which is a 332mm floating rotor and a forged caliper.

I believe that was the same size on the RX7, but not sure.

The pad is a common size. Also, the rotor is universal, so can switch from side to side.


But anyway, it doesn't answer my original question, or at least nobody has tried them on the 86.
