I guarantee its a field mouse. Cute little buggers, but they can jack your engine bay up in no time. They like to eat the plastic and wiring because its usually a soy based plastic, also the hood liner is great for shredding and making a nest. That's probably what you found on your "warm" engine area. I had the same thing happen to one of my cars. Soon after, Pinky and the brain met their maker. While I love animals, when it comes to this kind of crap I don't hesitate to eliminate the adversary. Check your air vent screen, located where your wipers are, they are known for chewing the screen away and getting in your ventilation system. Good luck with killing the little bastards!
