Clembo's pretty much right on it. Having a "trained professional" pump your gas for you reduces the insurance premium for the gas station, thus passing the savings onto the customer.
I'm not a fan.

The OP's camera/phone has chosen to properly "expose" the lights on the dash which causes the gauge face to be underexposed. If you look at the bottom of the tach you can see it's not black.
