Looking at the way I worded that post, I think I did it wrong. I didn't mean that sure an R8 could be fun but they're not driver's cars, I meant that an R8 could be fun (as Audi's only driver's car) but that the REST didn't really seem like driver's cars. Sorry for the confusion.

One of the reasons I got a BRZ was to have fun at lower speeds-- there's nothing wrong with a well-balanced car, but if they're well-balanced and absurdly grippy like the R8 you don't get to explore the limits of the car on public roads.

The BRZ's biggest contender when I was considering what to buy was actually a used 135i. One of the reasons I went for the BRZ instead was because of how fast a properly set-up 135 is-- it's just a little nuts. The problem is that you start having "fun" when you hit about double the speed limit on back roads-- it's fun to do but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it. I'm hoping my BRZ will have a much more useable performance envelope :P

Don't get me wrong, I think the R8 is an awesome car and I'd have one as a secondary vehicle in a second if I had the cash. As for the other Audis, they are extremely nice to look at but BMWs aren't heinous either and I'd definitely have one of them over their Audi-equivalent-- they just drive so nicely out of the box.
