There is no "have to." Vendors have hit 500+ hp on a stock block. Build your block, blow it, and you can have as much power as your wallet allows.
In fact I remember seeing several comments of people who have experience with the engine saying it's a better design than the EJ. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
