With proper gearing it's fine. My two street cars have peak torque numbers at 6,200 and 7,500 currently and both are just fine on the street. Yes, it takes a different style of driving (no shifting at 2,500RPM or expecting to pass in top gear as fast as a car with torque) but it's not a big deal at all.
