It's cheap enough that your girlfriend can drive herself in her own if she wants. Most households have a minivan..or an suv that they take the kids to soccer etc. Then there is the "other" vehicle that is used to drive either parent to work. We can easily be that "other" vehicle in a family situation. At 6800.00 you can buy a used car that you might get 23 MPG.. with 120K and probably a number of issues popping up, or you can buy the Elio with 36K 3 year warranty.. and get 84 MPG. This vehicle isn't for everyone for sure, but it will fit nicely in most all households.
