A clutch is ~$400 and you can have the flywheel resurfaced for ~$50. It's a job that can be done in a day in a garage or driveway on a rwd car.
With an auto transmission, problems seem to cost at least $1500 and unless you know your stuff it's not the type of thing you can fix in your garage.
