That, is actually illegal. You must turn into the 1st lane...although I still agree with you and do it all the time.
I did exactly that in front of a cop once, he pulled me over and said he almost hit me. Of course he was nowhere near hitting me, he just wanted to be a ****. The pullover was valid though. No ticket or warning.
