(IMHO) The only important question is this:

What is the root cause?

Without the answer to that question it's very hard to say if this thing is being "blow out of proportion" as you put it because we don't know how big of a problem it is. No one knows with any certainty if a cam gear replacement and/or an ECU flash will fix a problem. There aren't any explanations as to when neither work (as is the case with several cars here). Is this problem delt with or are we the tip of the iceburg? Their ECU explanation leaves a lot on the table...

All I know is that my car has been in the shop for 26 days and Toyota refuses to flash it. I know that my dealer has sold 22 FR-S' and I'm their only customer with the problem so it doesn't appear to be widespread. I don't think they have a good handle of the situation and based on what they have said to the press and what I have read here in this thred and on many others forums all over the world. I believe Toyota/Subaru have a lot more they could be telling us that they're not.
