When the mirror is door mounted, the mirror mounting would block a window from going down, so they have to have a little triangle thing to keep that section of the window stationary.

As for why door-mounted vs on the pillar, it's for a couple reasons. First is ideal mirror placement. As you make the windshield more raked, the a-pillar is pushed further up front. If you have the mirror on the a-pillar, it can be positioned too far forward, which is bad for ergonomics/visibility.

On the visibility note, when having it on the a-pillar, you'd have a big black triangle in place of the triangle glass. Door mounted mirrors tend to be better aerodynamically.
