Actually I think it's been said the car damage issue is partly because they work so closely with the manufacturers and they really don't want give data on the weaknesses. Just not their focus..

I think the lack of damage detracts from the immersion, though. I also don't see why they don't want to show damage data as that should be public information lol. I just see it as playing a military sim, but they don't want to show the reload animations because they don't want other countries to know how their guns work. Still, I do LOVE the driving physics of GT. They do a fantastic job on that part and it's something I like about it.
