Military aircraft have the standards lights on them (at least the ones I've seen) you just run dark when you don't need them.
Actually be pretty easy in larger scales.
In the smaller scales (1/72 & 1/48) you can usually hardly see the panel anyway so lighting it up would only work on certain aircraft.

This works but it is a lot of trouble for a few lights.
