I really like the new 86, and I plan on purchasing one very soon. That being said, I also understand how the automotive press works after reading these magazines for about 15 years now.
Whenever a new model is released, the hype surrounding that car is astounding. For example, when the new Camaro hit the markets, it was called a game changer, the best car for around 30,000 ever. Then the Mustang 5.0 was introduced, and suddenly the Camaro was a joke. It suddenly had a cartoonish interior, bad visability, and a weight problem.
Now the new 86 comes out and it is winning every comparison despite being slow, a bit pricey for what it is, a very awkward power delivery, and sub .9 g grip.
I guarantee this time next year, when the new g-whiz model from struggling automaker x comes out, the 86 will be made to look like a joke in order to sell magazines and get website hits from g-whiz fanboys. It is sad but true. Remember the Civic SI and VW GTI winning every single comparison when released? Now the SI is made to look like an example of what not to make, and if you drive one, you obviously don't know the kind of POS you've gotten into.
Again, I love the twins. They are exactly what I wanted from the auto industry, but I know what they are and what they are not.
