Last time I had the trans out, I used a dremel to grind down the shelf in the middle of the socket left behind as the socket wore into the ball. Then I lapped the ball and socket a little to verify that where once was a shelf was now a tiny bit lower such that the only contact surface beteen the two was just outside that flat region on the ball.
