They are not going to spend money developing new ICE engines or independently reinventing what other companies already have. The Japanese used to be big on engineering for the sake of engineering particularly in the motorcycle industry. With a few exceptions it's now becoming a refinement and or parts bin approach. Not necessarily a bad thing just a little less exciting
