I would not recommend a battery charger for two reasons: one, most new chargers will not charge a dead battery. this is because they will ramp up the charge voltage to test for a recharge rate and shut down if no battery is found to be chargeable. The peak voltage can be quite high. The out put on the new type of charger will shut off . Two, the older chargers will put out voltage but it is usually full wave rectified and with out the battery acting as a very large capacitor it is 120 cycle AC. and the voltage peaks can be quite high.
