Easy to tell when I have coolant leaking from the water pump onto my header after I got up to operating temps. There was even a trail of coolant leading up to my driveway from down the street.

It started with a loose hose connection on my forester cooler, temps went to red and not much left in the radiator. I suspect it damaged the seals.
