So if your going down a steep hill and your in a lower gear for engine braking and just using the brake pedal, it won't show what gear your in in the display?

i've also clutchless shifted, and the effect is the same. clutch-in, or moving the stick to neutral will both cancel the gear indicator display. the gear indicator doesn't show anything until a few seconds after you've realized it was the wrong gear.
