IMS bearing. Pre-2009 Caymans and boxters are affected. If it goes, the engine is dead by my limited understanding. Since it's a relatively common cause of cars going to the junkyard, replacing or fixing it is expensive.

There are ways to prevent IMS bearing failure, but I don't know much about them.
