As a side note to this, since it got me thinking, staggering pads the "wrong" way (more pad rear than front) actually improves braking distances on ice quite a bit. It has the added effect of getting the car sideways if you are braking while doing a light turn (vs plowing straight on with same pad, or front stagger), which I find better/safer but most people would find "undrivable" or "dangerous".
