So it appears I am out the other side, CEL has been off for a couple days now.
Had a cam gear replaced by a local subaru engine builder (outfront motorsports) which was about $800 and replaced the ecu ($80 from ebay, followed instructions here:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102810). So not too bad price wise and just in time for a track day tomorrow
