My understanding is that the stock muffler does not add any downforce but that it reduces lift, that may be a bit technical but an important distinction. The stock muffler fills up that cavity and creates a relatively smooth undercarriage. By removing the stock muffler and going with many aftermarket type mufflers, you remove that smooth undercarriage which causes turbulence as the air doesn't flow smoothly, which increases lift. Adding a diffuser eliminates this, plus it is more effective than the stock muffler and reduces substantially more lift and can theoretically add additional downforce. The Velox guys can help explain it better as they have done all the CFD work.
