"Let's make Scion and aim it at young, car-loving ppl--tuners too."
"hmmm all of the tuners are making the TC rear-wheel drive...they must like RWD! Lets give it to them!"
"They also seem to be swapping for bigger engines...well, lets give them an efficient but powerful one instead."

Hence the FT-86 project was born.

In some twisted way, Toyota's Scion game may have caused the FT-86 to be made in the first place.

Does anyone have an official press release to why Toyota/Subaru are making the 86?

I don't think enthusiast will die off completely. Depends on what kind of enthusiast. Old-school muscle car fanatics with their big block V8's will probably go b/c of all the emission regulations and that they absolutely hate hybrids and etc.

But then I'm sure many enthusiast just like a car that has a lot of character and is fun to drive. Small efficient cars can be fun to drive. Eventually hybrids will become lighter and etc. and engineers will find a way to make those just as much fun as say a "normal" sporty car.

There is the Tesla. Porsche is going to make that 918 Spyder hybrid. Even Honda's lackluster CR-Z is a step in the right direction. So companies are actually trying. Not to mention the intense research in weight-saving and turbo-charging 4cyls to have V6 power etc etc. Sounds like exactly what enthusiast want PLUS it makes for more efficient automobiles.

So, to the enthusiast out there, don't lose faith quite yet.
I think it's not because of Scion( doesn't make any sense at all). IIRC, admin of 4age forums went to Japan for a Toyota meeting. He asked all members in the forums and they liked to idea of using boxer to revise a long gone AE86( well what are you waiting for when Subaru has become a pet of Toyota?).

Another reason is, Mr Toyoda is an enthusiast. LF-A project was put to a stop, but was given a green light again just after Mr. Toyoda became a CEO. FT-86 was debuted just at the same time. right?

Last reason is, Scion is exclusively sold in NA, but FT-86 was debuted in Tokyo and designed by ED2 in Europe. There is no reason a car was made for Scion.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but you should use . It's not that hard, right?
