The AEM failsafe uses a lowside ground to enable the failsafe measure. It can be wired to a number of things. Many select to use it on the EBCS to cut boost in a lean event. It CAN be sent to the ECU as a means to pull timing out or cut fuel but a good tune is already going to have those counter measures.

Heres a shot of my wiring harness from Jacob at TuckTech. Its just a relay in line with the EBCS/EVAP harness. As soon as the gauge alarms, it kills power to the EBCS and drops you to wastegate pressure. TuckTech even offers the AEM Failsafe with this harness as a plug and play. No splicing required.
