I was wondering have you tried to put the bike with the handlebar in first? Front wheel removed. What I have done previously is rotate the handlebar 90 degree, while grabbing the seat stay insert the bicycle into the trunk. You usually need to angle and get the saddle into the trunk first, then the chainring.

Can you let me know how well this method works the next time you try this?

I'll be trying to load my bike into the BRZ later this week. Also 54cm (CAAD9).

Also the OP has a couple pics, one with both wheels removes, and another with just the front removed.
