So there are plenty of reasons for a wider wheel (and tire) even for this weight class. Some people will disagree, but really, wider wheels and tires don't provide more grip, they provide better heat dissipation. So if you intend to run the car on track, wider wheel and tire combos are better (assuming you don't pick up so much weight that you are inhibited because of it)

A 100hp miata on 9" wide wheels with even just a 225 series tire is faster lap after lap compared to something smaller. Power only effects linear acceleration. But lateral acceleration doesn't care about power, so every horsepower level can benefit from this.

not saying this is why the original poster did it...
