Engineering cost are so high that the cost of parts is mostly nothing in the price payed by the customer.
You're going to win the supplier bid by having the lower per-unit cost. Development costs are much less of a concern when you depreciate it across hundreds of thousands of units.

I'd bet we're closer to $300-400 cost to Subaru for shocks springs, hats, arms, bushings and bolts. OEMs make money, but it's really more like $1000-2000 per car.
