You can run pads to the backing, but you run the risk of the backing plate touching your rotors and scoring them. Also, as pads wear thinner, there's less heat sink mass, and they get hotter, and end up wearing faster.
You could always throw these in your track bag, and just keep em as backups.

Ok, I thought you were supposed to swap them out when the pad thickness equaled the thickness of the backing plate. Do I risk wearing out my brake fluid faster when they run that low?
