Zinger it's common, and believed good insurance, to 'overfill' subaru boxers a smidge. Starvation at high lateral G's (probably won't see it on the street) were a problem on the EJ motors and some people would put 6 qts in at each oil change, when the factory fill was I believe 4.8-5?

I assume they're following the logic here. 1/4" the OTHER way, low, would be a definite problem. Take this with a grain of salt because I do not know if the oil passages and pump system are sensitive to overfilling, but my previous experience with all sorts of EJ engines indicates it's good practice to be full or a little over at all times.
