Meh. People are blowing the sales decline out of proportion. Nobody outside of Toyota knows what they predicted as far as sales go. Sales have been pretty damn good compared to MANY other sports cars of the 90s/2000s. Sure, it's not selling as well as a Camry or Civic or whatever, but no sports car ever will.
As for the stripped down, basic tuner/racing spec... Has any other sports car had such a thing that was produced throughout the entire lifespan of the car? I'm not sure, but I don't think there has been one. In a way, it's a special edition for tuners and track junkies... take out all the shit that's going to be replaced anyway to keep initial costs down. Makes sense, but not necessarily to keep producing for the entire life of the car as it's really only for certain people, who probably have already bought one. I do wish that was an available option in the US though....
