If you look at the latest rumors/reports, that's exactly the plan... except they aren't marketing the lower end car as an S16, because they are stupid.

They say the IDx (no matter the styling or final name) will share a platform with the next generation Z (Z35). That could mean that the platform will be exactly the same and they'll use different engines & bodies for the two cars, or it could mean that they will both be based off of the same new platform, but maybe one will be modified slightly (wheelbase maybe slightly extended or cut shorter). Either way, it's a good business move. Making a new platform only for a single sports car is what makes a lot of these companies hesitate. It just costs them too much money. So, it makes a lot of sense to develop one new, GOOD, smaller/lighter platform and then make a few models use it.

Anyway, back to the S16. They really should make a new S-chassis car, both in name and style. Who doesn't love the way the S15 looked? Just take that as a base and modernize it! I mean, come on... realistically, the FRS/BRZ/GT86 is pretty much a modern NA S15 with a longer wheelbase. They are very similar in a lot of ways.
