In many (if not most) cases the FR-S not actually cheaper. The list on the BRZ is usually a few hundred dollars more than the comparable model FR-S. However, the Subaru dealers are more willing/able to deal, and Scion has that "Pure Price" ripoff that either prevents them from dealing or is used to avoid dealing on the price. If you look at a site like Edmunds to see the average prices actually being paid for the car, in many areas the out-the-door price is cheaper for the BRZ. In my area, the average BRZ was being sold for $1700 less than the Scion with the comparable trim package.
It's just another insult to the intelligence of the customer on the part of Scion. They draw in people who are afraid of negotiating and use that fear to convince them they're getting a better deal, when they most definitely are not. It's a testament to their marketing that they have managed to get their customer base to vehemently insist they paid less for their cars, when they didn't.
