Oh I love the 'Stang as a cruiser and it can make a great car. I had one as rental and the rumble of the engine (V6 only) was a nice throb to hear on the highway. But as a surgical weapon? MX-5, FR-S or Lotus Elise are on the top of my list. The latter doesn't exist in the NA market as a new car. Used Lotus can be scary.
I say test drive both and put them through similar courses. If you like the surge more than the twisties, then the Stang's for you! I respect both sides but prefer the twisties.
