phm14 just curious if you are, being so defensive, somehow related to toyota
imo, without further official information, this is a big issue right now: 1. failing seals may cause engine blowout 2. costs a decent amount of money to fix 3. may happen at any time during or after warranty period 4. warranty at some dealerships may be denied due to something trivial as cat-back or occasional track time and fighting warranty denial is PITA 5. recurring issue (back to 1-4 above) 6. a lot, if not majority, of people buy this car to mod it and they can't do it if the platform is not reliable - see 4 above.
and i probably have missed some other points.
in short, this car should only be bought by people who only do daily driving, keep it completely stock, and plan to sell it before warranty runs out.
i'm guessing not many people who buy this car fall into this category.
that's why i would expect toyota/subaru to step in and do extensive research and testing and find out with 100% certainty if this happens because people are running bogus custom tunes (as you seem to imply) or because there is a design and/or production issue (which it seems more people seem to believe). In latter case a TSB/recall would be greatly appreciated.
so far though both toyota and especially subaru have been playing dumb and considering that their track of fixing issues with this car is less than stellar (i have '13 and looks like only the taillight have not leaked thus far, i've got most of all other common problems) it does make me worry that my only option I'm left with is to stay stock and sell the car before warranty ends. i'm sure neither owners nor vendors would be happy with that option.
sitting and patiently waiting - good luck with that. first, they may not know there is an issue and second no business will ever spend extra money to fix an issue no one complains about. they will only react if you either hit them with money or bad publicity. unless people start bringing their cars to dealerships and have work done under warranty for every little issue until they realize that it's less expensive to spend time and fix the part than replace it over and over again; or until people start complaining and making noise everywhere they can - nothing will change.
