clutch grinding noise
I'm sure by now most of you have heard of the grinding/squealing noise at idle or in gear. I've recently replaced 2 throw out bearings on 2 seperate scion fr-s this past month. Toyota refused to cover this part or any related parts. Not replacing this right away can damage the trans housing, pressure plate, and or shaft.

I always wonder if the noise my clutch is making is normal. =/
But I don't know how to diagnose it... anyone can share some tips?.. :X Thanks. |

Back in the day, if a throw out bearing was going bad it would first whine ..... then squeal then fly apart ........ as it ground through the fingers on the pressure plate. After that, the pressure plate (being out of balance) would start to come unglued from the flywheel and tear up the clutch disk, which would mess up the flywheel. If it all happened all at once, it would "blow", sort like a grenade and blast through the bell housing, ripping up the floorboard. If your legs and private parts were in the way ........ too bad. Now, having said that, relax and enjoy driving your MT car. I do ....... of course, I've been "fixed" and at my age sex is no longer that important to me ..... :sigh: humfrz |
UMMMM Thanks? You may want to check out the 20 or so existing threads on throw out bearings in the Engine and Transmission or Issues sub forums.

Wait so it's definitely not normal if I get a small grinding noise when I let go of the clutch? ....(doesnt happen all the time if I'm very slow & careful with the clutch) >___> :bonk:

However, the only way to find out what is wrong is to physically inspect the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing and input shaft bearing by taking it apart. The only time I have ever heard a clutch "grind" is when all the asbestos (back in the day) was worn off and the disk was "running" on rivets. humfrz |

I'll replace the pivot and fork when I replace my TO bearing or otherwise get motivated to drop the transmission. #kindalazylately |

RIIIIIGHT...........:slap: Think about that for a moment. * find a soft spot on the gravel driveway * bust one clip getting it off the universal joint of the driveline * remove the shift linkage ..... remembering which way it went back on * remove the clutch linkage ..... oops lost that cotter pin in the gravel * unbolt the tail shaft from the cross member * start taking out the bolts around the bell housing ....... all of them EXCEPT the top one * drag a 2 1/2 gal bucket and place it under the transmission ... maybe with a 2x4 * NOW the last bolt on the top ....... a bitch isn't it * pull the transmission off the spline and hope it lands on the bucket * dig a trench in the gravel so you can clear the bell housing from the frame * ahhhh ...... yes, pop the tops on a few brews and call it a day NOW, @Ultramaroon ........ when are you going to start that project ...... :D humfrz |

I know that my stock throwout is bad, and when i hoon around, " having fun with my car", i do feel the changes on clutch feel and performance. My conclusion, if it helps anybody here upon reading this.... if you have a 13' frs and are as "lucky" as i am, that got one frs with the doomed to fail throwout... Take care of it while you can before it breaks every thing else like mentioned in this thread before. Got my $$ savings for trans drop and see exactly how bad the situation is. But if you hearing the "whine" and stuff, change that shit. I sent a nice and polite letter to somebody who i assume doesnt give a shit at toyota about the bad production and of this situation on some of this cars, cause not every car is having the situation. But, hell...so many cars with the same shit:iono: frustrating... Thanks! |
